Against Structuralist Theories of Computational Implementation

چکیده
Under what conditions does a physical system implement or realize a computation? Structuralism about computational implementation, espoused by Chalmers and others, holds that a physical system realizes a computation just in the case the system instantiates a pattern of causal organization isomorphic to the computation‟s formal structure. I argue against structuralism through counter-examples drawn from computer science. On my opposing view, computational implementation sometimes requires instantiating semantic properties that outstrip any relevant pattern of causal organization. In developing my argument, I defend antiindividualism about computational implementation: relations to the social environment sometimes help determine whether a physical system realizes a computation. 1 The physical realization relation 2 Semantics and computational implementation 3 Conforming to instructions 4 Implementing a computer program 4.1 The denotational semantics of Scheme 4.2 Worries about intentionality 4.3 Worries about the natural numbers 5 Implementing a machine model 6 Bounded structuralism

Scientific Theories and the Computational Theory of Perceptions - A Structuralist View Including Fuzzy Sets
Fuzzy Logic, Computing with words, and the Computational Theory of Preceptions build a stack of methodologies to help bridge the gap between systems and phenomena in reality and scientific theories. Bridging this gap has been a problem in all philosophical approaches, and the so-called structuralist view of theories in one that was established in the 20 century. In this paper we present a “fuzz...
متن کاملThe Structure of Causal Sets
More often than not, recently popular structuralist interpretations of physical theories leave the central concept of a structure insufficiently precisified. The incipient causal sets approach to quantum gravity offers a paradigmatic case of a physical theory predestined to be interpreted in structuralist terms. It is shown how employing structuralism lends itself to a natural interpretation of...
متن کاملTypology Reconsidered: Two Doctrines on the History of Evolutionary Biology
Recent historiography of 19th century biology supports the revision of two traditional doctrines about the history of biology. First, the most important and widespread biological debate around the time of Darwin was not evolution versus creation, but biological functionalism versus structuralism. Second, the “idealist” and “typological” structuralist theories of the time were not particularly a...

متن کاملImplementing Software Process Improvement: Two Cases of Technology Transfer
This paper addresses the issue of technology transfer in software development organizations. Common problems for the software industry are still software failures, project overruns, and unfinished projects. To remedy these, knowledge-intensive technologies like quality management and software process improvement (SPI) have been promoted. The organizational implementation of such approaches is a...
